Vocabulary

In looking back at a another unit, I feel my students did the best so far on their end of unit assessments. At the beginning of the year, students were guided in vocabulary activites and strategies to help them learn vocabulary words they did not know. The past few units students are still being guided but a lot of work is becoming more independent. Students spend time in large group discussing words, making connections, and learning vocabulary strategies that they can apply in their individual reading. Students have whole class vocabulary as well as differentiated vocabulary words that they read about and need to become familiar with in order to understand. Each student is repsonsible to create a Word MAP for our themed vocabulary as well as find definitions in a glossary for differentiated vocabulary words.
With words being different on our LEAD 21 assessments, I have been uncertain of what the results would like like. However, after modeling and guided practice students have become independent and are now taking responsibility to understand there words.
Unit 1 - 57%
Unit 2 - 66%
Unit 3 - 85%
Unit 4 - 85%
Unit 5 - 76%
Unit 6 - 87%
Our last unit could have been higher as one student got 6 words wrong out of 8. If this student's score is removed my class jumps to 93% correct. I need to spend some time with this student and make sure he/she understands some of the strategies we have been working on to improve his understanding with his words.
With one unit remaining, I am hoping to maintain 85% of vocabulary words correct on our next end of the unit assessment or even shoot for 90%. This will be difficult as our vocabulary words are becoming more challenging for students. They have made great progress so far and I am hoping to continue to build on what they have already achieved.
