My Goal: My goal was to communicate with parents/families about their child’s progress in school at least once a month through phone calls, e-mails, notes or other means of communicating. I hoped to develop and maintain a record system to help me keep track of who I communicated with.
In looking back at the past few months, I feel I have spent a lot of time communicating with my families. I do feel it has been very informative for families as I have had plenty of positive feedback. I spent time e-mailing, phone calls, written notes, as well as in person. However, my goal was to communicate with my families at least once a month with one of these ways. I created a progress report form that I completed and sent out to each family at least once a month but many times I sent them out bi-weekly. Most of my families have e-mail so it was easier for me to send the file as an attachment.
In these progress reports, I had an area for attendance, work habits, citizenship, and teacher comments. Every 2 weeks I focused on a subject area and tried to communicate with parents how their child was doing with the skill we were working on.
I created a spreadsheet with each child’s name and then used it as a checklist in making sure that I communicated with families at least once a month. So far up through March, I have communicated with my families at least once or more per month.
My next step is to create a survey and check in with parents to truly see how they feel about the progress reports or my communication. I am still unsure in what questions to ask and in what form to create it.
What would I do differently next year? If I were to build on this idea next year, I would keep it to once a month but try to maintain bi-weekly reports with those families of struggling students or behavior problems. Even though my goal was to communicate once a month, I really tried hard to create progress reports bi-weekly which became time consuming.
