Vocabulary goal

In looking back at my students unit 5 assessment, I noticed they did not do as well on this assessment as previous assessments. During the unit, we had many things come up which did not allow us the usual time for reading each week. Specifically, students were not given ample time to complete their vocabulary activities and have sufficient time to practice their vocabulary strategies. As a result, their scores dropped from 85% of the words correct to 76%. Most of the words they did not get correct were differentiated vocabulary words. I did notice the advanced students had more words wrong compared to that of other reading groups. Was it the lack of time spent on the stories and vocabulary strategies? Or was it due to giving the advance groups more independent work time with the stories that they truly did not understanding the words?
Each week we attempt to spend time learning vocabulary strategies to help students better understand important words. I am hoping to build more independent strategies so students can better understand our vocabulary words even if students work with the teacher or by themselves.
I do believe the activities and skills we are working with in class are truly impacting student understanding with our vocabulary words. As we move throughout the school year, I am hoping students will become more independent with the strategies and skills to help with their learning.
