In looking back at the first ten days of school, I am pleased with the work and efforts of my students. We have spent much time modeling and building stamina in many of the activities we have been doing. We spent time developing student and parent hopes and dreams, established rules, modeling daily procedures, along with many other things. It has taken us much time, but I am hoping the investment early will pay dividends throughout the year.
In implementing ideas from responsive classroom, I am hoping to build a positive community within my class this year. So far, I am finding myself slowing down and focusing on the positive teacher language. I am recognizing some instances where I want to say something, but catching myself and forcing myself to make sure it is in a positive way.
I am not where I want to be with it at the moment, but feel it is a great start and that I am headed in the right direction. I just wonder why I was not a part of the RC workshop many years ago. I certainly feel it has helped me or given me tools and ideas to help me become a better teacher.
The other day, I wrapped our class rules in paper and had each student come up and tear off a piece. They were excited to see what was underneath and were were surprised to find our class rules. Each student agreed to sign the rules and I placed it on our wall for a reminder to all students. Throughout the year we will continually revisit and have discussions about how we can keep those in mind throughout our entire school day.
I play a large role in creating a positive environment with my students. I am hoping that I can help my students learn, have fun, and enjoy 2nd grade!
