In looking at parent/guardian information and responses, most people surveyed believe that being able to recall addition facts fluently is important. One person mentioned maybe not all of them. 8 people marked that his/her child knew all of the addition facts whereas 9 of them marked it as "knows some." In taking a look at the pre assessments of both oral and written, I did not have many students showing mastery or fluency within basic facts. Some articles have shown that recalling 30 or more addition facts is being fluent. If that is the case, I would have 0 students in that category according to data from written and oral timed tests. However, according to the oral assessment there were 3 students who were able to answer 20 or more addition facts within one minute. I do feel there are 3 students who are close to being fluent with their facts.
14 people responded that his/her child could solve addition facts without the use of his/her fingers which interested me. When I assessed my students in the oral portion, only 5 students appeared to "not" use their fingers, otherwise all of the other students used their fingers in some sort of way (for a number of problems) on the oral assessment. Perhaps I could have rephrased the question and made it a bit more clear - Is your child able to solve all addition facts without the use of his/her fingers?
My next step is taking a look at the student pre survey and tally the results.
