Parent communication

One of my goals I wanted to work on this school year has been in regards to parent communication. I originally wanted to communicate with parents using phone, e-mail, written notes or in person at least once a month. However, I shifted into using a progress report template that another colleague set up and I am working on sharing it with parents once a month. In the report, I have a place for attendance, work ethic, citizenship, and a place for teacher comments.
So far, parents have enjoyed receiving these reports about their child. Even though my goal was to communicate monthly, I have been trying to do it bi-weekly but it has been taking more time than I had hoped it would. With my monthly newsletters and class webpage, I have found this to be an ideal way in sharing what is happening in the classroom along with making it more personal to each parent in regards to their child.
I also would like to set this up for one of my smart goals but not quite sure on how to work  make it useful in that way. How can I set this up to make it an effective smart goal that has all of the components?

  1. Tony,
What a great idea for parent communication! I always struggle with what and how to share information with parents. How much is too much? What is the most valuable? What can I send that will actually be helpful and not confusing? This seems like a great way to be consistent! I would love to see the format of this progress report.

  2. Tony, As a parent, I always appreciated teacher comments and information on my child. Comments on the report card meant more to me than the letter grade s/he received. Never underestimate how it can maintain and increase parents who will advocate for you because you advocated for their child! Janet
