I have been struggling in getting all of the components of my morning meeting in the past few weeks. If I implement my morning meeting, I lose a good chunk of reading time. Something I have struggled with all year. Depending on the day, we usually have 60-85 minutes of reading instruction. So the past week or so, I have not been doing much at all of the morning meeting components. In other words, there are 2 days a week where my reading instruction is less than 60 minutes. Our reading series calls for at least 90 minutes or more each day. I feel that having a morning meeting impacts our reading instruction and we are not able to get too all the things that I need to cover during a reading block. Is it the best thinking? No. Something needs to be done and I need to address this issue.
My solution for our upcoming unit is to change my math, writing, and reading schedules to allow for more time, at least to incorporate morning meeting a bit more. In addition, it would give me more reading time every day. However, the down side is that it would leave me with less writing time each day and week.
Would creating more writing time within our reading block be a way to solve the less writing time? How can I effectively cover all of the writing demands with less time than I previously have had? How will changing the schedule impact my student's? Will I see a difference in their engagement or on/off task behavior by moving math to the AM and reading to the PM? Many other questions have come to mind as well.
I have spent some time pondering these questions and this issue. I have come to the conclusion that I truly will know the answers to them by making the change. Next week, I am officially changing my schedule and will give it a try for one unit of reading. It is going to change the way we do things in my room, but hopefully it will make a difference for my students.
I am curious as to how this will work out. Will I see any difference in motivation, behavior, or achievement? I will find out shortly.
