The past few weeks have been difficult weeks in dealing with technology. A couple times recently, we have been experiencing quite a few delays and problems with the internet in our building. When it is slow or not even working, my students are not able to complete the desired tasks and activities. We have relied on our promethean board to access our reading book as well as other reading related activities for students to complete in small groups during reading. When the internet is slow or not working, my students need to be more patient than usual. We also rely on using the computer lab for compass learning daily, yesterday it was extremely slow and students encountered many error problems. Today it was not working and students could not access what they needed to.
I have always had back up plans in mind just in case technology failed. Lately, I have really had to think more about this as it has been occurring more and more lately. It can be a great asset but lately it has been more frustrating for myself and my students. There are many sites that we seem to rely on and make use of throughout the day. When the internet is not working, it changes much of what we do with the computer throughout the day. The student computer and the computer lab are pretty much worthless when the internet is not working properly. We do not have many programs on them. There are a few things my students can do without it but it definitely changes what we would like to accomplish in using the computers.
Luckily I have many backup activities students can do on the promethean board that do not require the internet. I have come to the decision that using a large reading book is a much better way to go than a slow internet connection. We can get so much more accomplished in working with a large book during our whole group reading time.
I just hope out tech department can work to solve some of the problems and delays we have been experiencing lately.
