I have been excited by some of the effort and work my students have put forth with their basic facts. I have noticed an improvement in their subtraction facts as well.
This past week, students took a 2 minute timed test like I have given in previous years. Student results were significantly higher than in years past.
I posted about this in November but I am giving an update on the comparison of data.
Nov. 2011 Dec. 2011 Dec. 2010 -last year- Apr. 2011
Median- 36 43 20 37
Mode- 9,34,36,38,39 45 19 38
Range- 39 48 37 66
Mean- 31.94 36.35 23.38 38.58
In looking at these numbers compared to last year's class, my students have made huge improvements in their ability to recall facts. We have spent time daily this year engaged in activities to help with basic facts. Last year we did timed tests, worksheets, flash cards, and oral discussions. I am liking our progress but know we definitely have room for improvement. I realize they are different classes and it is like comparing apples to oranges but I truly think math games and number sense activities have benefited my students.
Lately students have been spending time playing addition or subtraction top it. The last few minutes of the time they are able to play addition or subtraction war. They flip over 2 cards and the first person to say the sum or the difference gets the cards. I have also paired students up by similar abilities these past few days to hopefully challenge them.
With most of the groups, they have been more engaged these past few days as I try to change it up and mix up the math games that we have learned this year. I am excited to see how students will do on our post written and oral timed tests. I will be wrapping up my action research next week but will continue to implement daily math games on a daily basis.
