I began implementing the rubber band challenge with one of my students on October 20. It has been about 16 days of data collection. I felt like we were starting to make progress a couple weeks ago with his attention and off task behaviors but then he missed a week of school. Since his return, I felt like we have had to start all over again and he has returned to what he was doing at the beginning of the year. This has been difficult as this student has been one of the most off task students I have worked with. I do notice that he seems to do better on Monday and Tuesday and then fall apart on Wednesday - Friday. The results on M and T were 10/25, 10/25, 15/25, 0/25, 8/25, and 13/25. On Wednesday through Friday he has averaged around 5/25. I try to greet him at the door and discuss how what we are going to work on each day. He greets me with a smile but usually needs reminders for what to do each morning and throughout the day.
I have broken his day down into five 30 minutes blocks in which he needs to be on task and complete his work. During each time frame, I have five rubber bands on my wrist. So usually has a total of 25 rubber bands. I tweaked the rubber band challenge a little to fit my needs. When I am working with him he is better but as soon as I walk away to help someone else, he is unable to complete most of his work. This past week has been difficult for him and he did not achieve his goal at all this past week. I do not plan on continuing this intervention with this student as I have not seen the results consistently as I had hoped for. I need to look for another one that will help me in helping this student build stamina for being on task and completing his work.
I would try this one with another student as it has some great visuals for students. I would once again start out with a low goal and then build it up as the child experiences success with completing work or being on task. Does anyone have any ideas on what they have done with those students who have a difficult time being on task and completing work? This student is also low in many areas but there are many things that I know he can do but still fails in completing them or being on task.
