I have spent countless hours researching articles and journals in regards to fluency with basic facts. There seems to be a number of ways to achieve fluency. However, it still appears to be a National concern for educators. What is the best method? The research is mixed and I feel that a number of ways may help improve students' fluency with basic facts. Meaningful practice seems to be a key role in this process. Many articles point to a foundation of number sense being a critical element as it entails an awareness of number names, values, and relationships. Students must be able to see patterns, connections, and relationships to numbers in order to become fluent and recall basic facts with little hesitation. As a result, students need experiences that include manipulatives, discussions, strategies and activities that build on their understanding of number sense.
